Penobscot Theatre Company (PTC) and the Greater Bangor Convention and Visitors Bureau (CVB) have an array of special activities on tap to celebrate the first official day of summer, June 21. The theatre’s second annual RACE TO THE STAGE, a costume 5K, will start at 9:00 am at the corner of Union and Main Streets, followed by Bangor’s Beer Festival, “Tap Into Summer,” on the Bangor Waterfront. The festival will wind-down just as the theatre heats up again with two performances of The Rocky Horror Show at 5:00 pm and 10:00 pm.

“Fun will be the order of the day,” said PTC’s Artistic Director Bari Newport. “Folks can hit the ground running with our costume 5K, while away the afternoon sampling Maine’s best brews, then come do the time warp again!” Enjoying The Rocky Horror Show in costume is part of the tradition for many devotees, so Newport expects some ensembles will serve double-duty on the 21st. “With Rocky and our race coinciding, we may see more runners in corsets and fishnet stockings this year. We certainly hope so!”

To encourage event hopping, the theatre and the CVB are extending discounts to participants of the Race to the Stage and Bangor’s Beer Festival. Registered racers will be eligible for $5 off the price of festival admission. A link to the special offer will be sent to race participants with their registration confirmation. Those with Beer Fest tickets may register for the race at the specially discounted price of $17 through race day. Interested parties may register in advance online or by calling 207-942-3333. Paper registration forms and route information are available on PTC’s website.

PTC’s mission is to produce high-quality, professional theatre works and programs that inspire the imagination and cultivate a lifelong passion for the art form. For 40 years, PTC has served as the cultural cornerstone of downtown Bangor, an engine of creativity, intellectual stimulation, economic growth, and fun. The theatre’s diverse educational and outreach programming serves more than 5,000 students. Proceeds from the race will help fund these offerings.

Bangor’s Beer Festival, Tap Into Summer, will feature selections from some of Maine’s most notable breweries, including Geaghan Brothers Brewing Company, Sea Dog Brewing Company, and Penobscot Bay Brewery. In addition to providing samples of their offerings, brewers will present and speak about special new brews and suggested pairings. Race to the Stage participants may purchase tickets for the general session for $20, which includes admission from 1:00-5:00 pm and ten 4-oz. beer tastings with the festival’s signature Paul Bunyan sample glass. VIP tickets, available to race registrants for $45 each, include advance entry to the festival and lunch.
