Penobscot Theatre Company is closing its 40th-anniversary season with its most raucous production to date: The Rocky Horror Show will run June 12 through June 28 with late-night shows and all the bells and whistles diehard audiences have come to expect. “Literally, there will be bells,” reports Artistic Director Bari Newport. “We’ll have audience participation bags available at the door with bells, confetti…It’s going to be a party! With PTC and ROCKY HORROR both sharing a 40th anniversary, it’s a big occasion!”

First produced in London in 1973, and adapted into the 1975 film The Rocky Horror Picture Show, the daring musical has developed a cult following, inspiring audiences from Singapore to Sydney to do the time warp again and again. The story follows staid Brad and prim Janet, a young couple that stumbles unwittingly and irreversibly into the home of a mad transvestite scientist unveiling his new creation, a muscle man named Rocky Horror. Will they suffer the fate of Eddie or give themselves over to absolute pleasure? Even those new to the show will know before intermission that Brad is wrong: This ain’t no hunting lodge and everything’s not going to be alright.

“I have wanted to do this show since I was 15 years old,” said director Nathan Halvorson, “and now I’ve got rockstar designers and an incredibly talented, perfectly twisted cast to make my dreams come true. Seriously, when I was an insecure freshman in high school, ROCKY changed the way I thought about myself and the world. It celebrates difference and embraces so-called oddities. ‘Don’t dream it. Be it.’ It’s a powerful message.”

The cast includes Dominick Varney in the iconic role of mad scientist Frank ‘N’ Furter, joined Paul Allen, Brianne Beck, Justin Chamberlain, Lauryn Goodall, Ira Kramer, Heather Libby, Jordan Lorenz, Grace Livingston, Jesse McCormick, Arthur Morison, Bob Potts, and Christie Robinson. Lex Liang (set and costumes), Jonathan Spencer (lighting), and Meredith Perry (props) comprise the design team.

As a gift back to the community on its 40th anniversary, the theatre has discounted all ROCKY tickets to $25 each. Student rush tickets will be sold at the door for $10 (cash only) space permitting. Patrons will not be permitted to bring participatory items into the show so all toast, etc. should be left at home or in the car. Goody bags will be available for $5. This production includes mature content inadvisable for young audience members.

THE ROCKY HORROR SHOW is produced in partnership with the Maine Savings Bank, Canyon Networks, Big Bang Boom Fireworks, and Paddy Murphy’s.
