Penobscot Theatre Company Proudly Presents THE FOX ON THE FAIRWAY a hole-in one, belly-laugh marathon

Fox on the Fairway at PTC Sept. 5 - 27

Penobscot Theatre Company opens its 40th Anniversary Season with a hole-in-one, belly-laugh marathon. The Fox on the Fairway, a new farce by Ken Ludwig plays at the historic Bangor Opera House from September 5 -22.

Two rival golf clubs. A prodigy with a broken arm. A priceless vase. A $200,000 wager. Granny’s engagement ring. The Golf Channel. Oprah. Raw oysters. Champagne. There’s even a couple putters, a driver and few golf balls knocking about the stage. Sounds like a recipe for a disaster on stage and laughter in the seats!

Some of the regions best comedians, Dominick Varney, Ben Layman, Christie Robinson, AJ Mooney, Brent Hutchins and Bernard Hope star in this Caddyshack meets Fawlty Towers farce.

This madcap romp around the tap room of Quail Valley Golf Club, revolves around the Annual Inter-club Golf Tournament between Quail Valley and their archrivals, Crouching Squirrel. With his job on the line, Q.V. Director Henry Bingham has enrolled a scratch golfer named Tramplemaine, only to have the guy quit the day before the match and join Crouching Squirrel. To add to Bingham’s worries is a bet he has placed with C.S. Director Dickie Bell, the master of the malaprop and wearer of the ugliest golf sweaters on the planet.

“This is a very funny play,” Artistic Director, Bari Newport says. “We have so many patrons who are avid golfers but you don’t need to be to find yourself exploding with laughter. I wanted to start our 40th Season with a good reason to skip the shrink! It’s terrific to be reminded of just how good a hearty laugh is for the soul.”

The Fox on the Fairway is directed by New York based, Shelley Butler, who grew up in Orono and went to Orono High School. “I grew up coming to Penobscot Theatre Company,” Butler remarks. “It’s very special to be back. Full circle.”

Longtime Penobscot Theatre collaborator, Lex Liang returns from New York to create the costumes and set for this idiosyncratic world. He is joined by New York based lighting designer, Scott Bolman, sound designer, Brandie Rita, costume associate Kevin Koski and properties designer, Meredith Perry.

Ken Ludwig is an internationally acclaimed playwright whose many hits on Broadway, in London’s West End and throughout the world have made his name synonymous with modern comedy. Audiences may be most familiar with Ludwig as the author of the popular Lend Me a Tenor and Moon Over Buffalo.

During each performance of the show, attendees are encouraged to don their most memorable golf ensembles. Prizes will be awarded nightly. A prize will also be awarded to the first person who can sink a putt on a putting green set up in the lobby of the theater before the show and during intermission.

Performances will be held every Wednesday through Sunday with ticket prices ranging from $24 to $37. Student, senior, military and group rates apply. For more information on Penobscot Theatre Company, visit www.penobscottheatre.org or call (207) 942-3333.
