Penobscot Theatre Company Announces the official kick-off of the 2013-2014 Season!

Scenes & Songs Sneak Preview Event Thursday, August 22 at 7PM

Penobscot Theatre Company, Bangor’s 40 year-old professional theatre company, invites you to the opening party of its 2013-2014 40th anniversary season.

PTC Previews its 40th Anniversary Season!

“Scenes and Songs is perhaps the most popular event of our season,” says Artistic Director Bari Newport. “I am thrilled to announce that ghastly golf pants, ghosts and ghouls, dancing bears, charming princes, Tony winners, World Premieres, and an enduring classic are all a part of PTC’s 40th Anniversary Season. We look forward to sharing snippets from all of our upcoming productions at the free Scenes & Songs event.”

Newport adds, “We will also be making a surprise announcement. It is an evening and a season, not to be missed!”

The 40th Anniversary Season tees off with The Fox on the Fairway (September 5-22). This fast-paced comedy follows the owners of two rival country clubs who shake hands on a sizeable wager for their next golf tournament then watch as it all comes crashing down around them. The cut-throat contest plays out amidst three love affairs, a missing diamond, ghastly sweaters, mistaken identities, emotional mulligans, and rapid-fire chip shots! A charmingly madcap adventure about love, life, and man’s eternal love affair…with golf. A hole in one!

Next, a classic ghost story… Combine an exquisitely written spine-chilling plot with one of the longest running plays in British Theatre history and you have The Woman in Black (October 17-November 3). Summoned to attend the funeral of an elderly client, a young solicitor discovers the tragic secrets hidden behind the shuttered windows of the remote Eel Marsh House. A woman in black is not as she appears, and a creeping sense of unease takes hold as her story unfolds to uncertain end. Sure to awaken the spirits residing in the Bangor Opera House!

Just in time for the holidays, a musical extravaganza breathes fresh life into a familiar fairy tale. Cinderella: A New Telling of an Old Tale (December 5-29)features outlandish costumes, exuberant choreography, spectacular sets, and a cast of colorful characters, including a charming prince, hilariously hideous stepsisters, and some very ba-a-a-d sheep. Packed with sharp wit, wild fun, and original music, this creative twist on a magnificent classic is spectacular fun for all ages. Grand pageantry befitting the holiday season! A REGIONAL PREMIERE!

Competing visions of the way life should be! In One Blue Tarp (January 30 – February 16) the ubiquitous blue tarp provides the backdrop for this comic play about a Maine native defending his right to do as he’s always done and a woman “from away” who wants to change things and knows just how to do it. A lighthearted but poignant examination of the notions of home, place, and progress. First written and developed for PTC’s 2010 Northern Writes New Play Festival; named Best Play for the State of Maine.  A WORLD PREMIERE!

Welcome to the savage, underbelly of playground politics! When little Benjamin whacks his playmate Henry with a stick, breaking two teeth, it is important that the boys’ parents set the right example by discussing the matter calmly and reasonably. After all, nothing will be gained by behaving like children. But in God of Carnage (March 13 – 30) the thin veneer of civility is stripped away with corrosive wit in this comedy of manners… without the manners. A TONY AWARD WINNER!

With original music by singer-songwriter Jacob Augustine and starring Bangor native, Monica Willey, PTC proudly presents a groundbreaking new production of Our Town (April 24-May 11). Our Town tells the story of young lovers George and Emily, whose life in a small New England town becomes a microcosm of everyday life. The wisdom of the play, rendered through a deceptively simple story, makes Our Town an enduring treasure of the American theatre. In celebration of the play’s 75th Anniversary and our 40th, PTC draws on the unique strengths of our community to mount an OUR TOWN for our time. A PULITZER PRIZE WINNER!

Dramatic Academy will expand during the 40th Anniversary Season

In addition to these six mainstage productions, Penobscot Theatre Company will also present three Dramatic Academy Productions, The Witches, based on the book by Roald Dahl (October 31 – November 2); The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobebased on the book by C.S Lewis (February 21-23); Alice in Wonderland based on the book by Lewis Carroll (May 16-18).
